Sleigh Barn

  • We do not know when the original sleigh barn was built but it is visible in many images of the old carriage barn. It is smaller and was used for storage of the Black family's sleigh collection, which makes sense since they would otherwise be in the way of a working barn.

  • In the early 2000’s, the Sleigh Barn was renovated to be used for seasonal programming space. While it was used for sleigh storage again during the construction process, it will again be used for a variety of education and community events and activities.

  • There are six sleighs in the Woodlawn collection.

Doghouse

  • The doghouse found near the sleigh barn is believed to have been built during the time of Nixon Black, it could have been used for any number of his dogs and can be seen in historic photographs from the 1890’s.

  • We believe that the size of the dog house is due to the fact that Nixon had a particular fondness for St. Bernard's, as seen in this picture of Nixon and his mother with two dogs near the sunporch at the back of the museum.
