Ice House

These buildings were utilitarian structures and not built to last. In 1878, the Black family papers refer to the field behind this known icehouse location as where the old icehouse was leading to the belief that there may have been other ice houses on the property at one time.

Changing needs for ice would also indicate the size of the structure. When Woodlawn housed many family members and servants, they would have required more ice for the warmer months than when only Frances Black and the first caretaking family lived on the property before electricity.
